East Jaintia Hills District constitutes the eastern most part of Meghalaya and covers a geographical area of 2126 sq.kms. Khliehriat is the headquarters of newly created East Jaintia Hills District and covers a distance of 100 kms from state capital. The National Highway leading to Badarpur (Assam), Agartala (Tripura), Aizawl (Mizoram) and Imphal (Manipur) passes through it. It has inter-District border with West Jaintia Hills District, inter-state border with Assam and international border with Bangladesh. Besides the floating population, the District is inhabited by diverse castes, creeds, communities, tribes and ethnic groups who have their own distinct culture, religion and language. The population comprises 1, 22,436 persons spreading in 206 villages. The literacy rate of the District is 53%.

Jaintia Eastern College is situated at Khliehriat, the headquarters of East Jaintia Hills District offering higher education in both Arts and Commerce stream. It is a Co-Educational institution established to provide college education to the students who are mostly first generation readers and belongs to socially deprive and downtrodden families of the area.

The College was established in the year 1992 with the initiative of a few prominent spirited individuals, educationists, church leaders, the deprived parents, social workers and conscious public sponsored by the Society for Higher Education, Khliehriat.

The Society for Higher Education is a non-profit organization founded in April 1992 by the prominent spirited individuals of erstwhile Khliehriat Civil Sub-Division (now East Jaintia Hills District). One of the motives of the Society is to bring college education within the reach of underprivileged people of this area. In this respect, (L) Rev. T. Dkhar and (L) Rev. S. W. Lyngdoh, the founder President and Secretary of the Society, initiated to establish a College at Khliehriat. In the same year, the College, named as “Jaintia Eastern College” was established and inaugurated by Late O.L.Nongtdu, the then Home Minister, Govt. of Meghalaya and former MP (Rajya Sabha) on the 21st October 1992.

In the beginning, the College began with 60 (sixty) students and 7 (seven) lecturers. At present it has 900 students in its fold. In these 25 years, the College has produced many eminent personalities who have excelled themselves in the field of politics, academics, bureaucracy, judiciary, etc. Though the College has no mechanism to track the whereabouts of the past students yet it is noteworthy to mention that a good number of students progressed successfully in life. Since its inception, the College has not only catered to the need of the local students but also of the neighboring Districts and children of migrant workers. The active involvement of the College in disseminating knowledge and hard-working performance within the area has satisfied the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong to extend permanent affiliation to the College for Arts stream and a provisional affiliation for Commerce stream. The College obtained University Grants Commission’s 2f and 12B recognition and the College was accredited with Grade ‘B’ in 2016 by National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore. Moreover, the College is included under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) Meghalaya in 2016 for development of infrastructure.

The College has made all efforts to keep pace with the new changes in educational scenario. Besides introduction of ICT enabled classrooms various mechanisms for sustaining enhancement of quality education and governance, new courses/subject (s) have been introduced.

Being the only College in the District, it enrolls student from different background having low academic performances. In spite of that, it has made optimum efforts to improve their academic performance by introducing various mechanisms that shape the personality of the students.

The infrastructure like classrooms for different classes, teacher’s common room, conference hall, hostel for girls, separate common rooms for boys and girls, computer laboratory, internet facilities, Wi-Fi enabled campus, recreational park, play fields, etc. of the College is adequate. Apart from the above, the students are also benefited from the facilities available in the College Library.

For enhancement quality education, the College constituted Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) as per UGC guidelines. Under the supervision of this cell, various Sub-Committees like Women Welfare Committee, Anti-Ragging Cell, Students Welfare Committee, Career Guidance and Counseling Cell, Academic Committee, Disciplinary Committee, Evaluation Committee, Legal Literacy Club, Music and Cultural Committee, Seminar Committee, Research Committee, Grievance Redressal Cell, etc. were established. The Cell made all the necessary arrangements to monitor and coordinate these sub-committees for academic and non-academic progress of the College.
